SZ's NEV exports to BRICS surge 348.4% in first three quarters

Shenzhen exported 4.74 billion yuan (US$663.9 million) worth of new electric vehicles (NEVs) to other BRICS countries in the first three quarters of this year, a 348.4% increase from the same period last year, according to Shenzhen Customs.

The term BRIC was coined in 2001 to refer to the emerging market economies of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. BRICS officially took shape with South Africa's inclusion in 2010.

Since early 2024, BYD has seen a promising increase in its export volume to countries like Brazil, according to Liu Feng, manager of the customs affairs department at BYD, which overtook Tesla in the final quarter of 2023 to become the world's largest electric car company.

Liu revealed that from January to September, the company exported more than 27,000 NEVs to other BRICS countries, with more than 20,000 going to Brazil – a fivefold increase compared to the same period last year. Brazil and India have emerged as the main export destinations for BYD among BRICS countries.

To support this growth, Shenzhen Customs has recommended that BYD be included in the coordinated supervision pilot program at ports.

This move effectively addresses the challenges faced by BYD in loading, unloading, and dismantling large-scale sets of equipment on-site at the ports.

The program has enabled the prompt removal of equipment from the port to the enterprise warehouse, reducing clearance time from five-eight hours to under one hour. This ensures that the company's key production equipment is swiftly put into operation on the production line.

Data from Shenzhen Customs show that Shenzhen has made steady progress in exporting NEVs, lithium-ion batteries, and photovoltaic products — collectively known as the "new three" major tech-intensive green products. Exports of these products reached 71.43 billion yuan in the first three quarters this year, an 8.9% year-on-year increase, and exports of NEVs reached 22.86 billion yuan, an increase of 67% year on year.
